PATAGONIA
22 January 2005
Presented by John McCarthy
On this week's programme John McCarthy is standing in
for Sandi Toksvig. He will be talking to his guests Christabelle
Dilks and Oliver Campbell about their travels in Patagonia.
John will also be talking to Paul Safont about the extraordinary
travel adventures in Wide World Magazine.
Guests:
Christabelle Dilks, Travel writer
Christabelle fell in love with Argentina at the age of
16 when her family lived on the edge of Patagonia. Two
years later the Falklands War broke out and she had to
leave the country and her friends. Twenty years later
she returned, travelled widely and rediscovered Patagonia.
She is the author of the "Footprint guide to Argentina"
and the "Footprint Patagonia Guide".
They are published by Footprint Handbooks, ISBN:
1903471753.
Oliver Campbell, Film Maker and traveller
In 2003 Oliver Campbell, his brother Julian and friend
Harry Glass retraced a journey undertaken by their Great-Grandfather
more than a century ago. They trekked for about 450 miles
using the 100 year old guidebook which their ancestor,
William Campbell, had written. They intended to make the
trip an authentic Victorian adventure.
Paul Safont, Compiler of anthology of Wide World Magazine
Paul first discovered Wide World magazine when he inherited
a box full of them from his Grandfather. The magazine
was published between 1898 and 1965 and is a cross between
Boy's Own and a serious travel magazine. It contains travel
adventures such as the tale of a man who went over Niagara
Falls in a rubber ball, many of which were failures. The
Wide World: True Adventures for Men is published
by Macmillan ISBN: 1405049316.
